I picked this up expecting a light mythology read and got something much richer. The sections tracing how dragons shifted from symbols of destruction to guardians of wisdom across different cultures kept me turning pages way past midnight.
The chapter on Eastern dragons versus Western ones finally explained why the same creature gets treated so differently across cultures. I ended up reading the whole folklore section in two sittings.
I've read a few dragon books that lean hard on European fire-breathers, so the chapters on Asian and Mesoamerican lore were a nice surprise. The book treats dragons as symbols of power and guardianship rather than just monsters, which made it a slower, more thoughtful read.
